Kallocain

kboye.jpgJust finished reading Kallocain, a dystopian novel set in the 21st century but written in 1940 by the Swedish poet and novelist Karin Boye.

Unlike 1984 and Brave New World, Kallocain presents us with a protagonist who is a supporter of the repressive government and who hopes his new invention -- a truth serum -- will lead to disloyal thought itself becoming a punishable offence. Only through secondary characters do we glimpse those who seek to bring about a revolution.
