Rhyolite is a ghost town within a few hours’ drive of Las Vegas. Hard to believe, but at one point it boasted schools, banks, and a railroad connecting it to the outside world. It’s kept in a state of arrested decay by the Bureau of Land Management, and is a worthwhile escape if you grow tired of present-day boomtowns. The surrounding scenery is quite striking.
