Revisiting Ки́жи

Kizhi

Going back to some photos I shot eight years ago in Karelia, with a circa-2003 camera (Canon 10D).

Kizhi

I was curious to see what modern software, specifically Lightroom 4.1, could do with the files from this early DSLR. Luckily most of what I shot was in RAW format — on the island of Kizhi, above, I actually remember running out of space on my Compact Flash cards, and having to back to shooting JPEG. The above shots, however, were taken using RAW and had has a bit of extra detail that Lightroom can coax out of it.

Another interesting thing to try would be to find some of the indoor shots, which were taken at ISO400 or 800. First-generation DSLR sensors were very noisy at these settings — almost unusable at 800 — but Adobe’s noise reduction technology has advanced quite a bit since then. The Luminance-based de-noising might make some shots I had previously discarded usable again.
